Going far, together with public-private partnerships - a word from our director
With the September rentrée we have launched two new IHI projects: MedTechLabel and FORTIFY. Both are great examples of how the public-private partnership model can take on challenges that no one partner can address alone – and how we can address bottlenecks that slow down innovation in Europe. MedTechLabel is developing a digital labelling framework for medical devices – working with patients, regulators, national authorities and manufacturers to design solutions for many years to come. Similarly FORTIFY brings together civil society, researchers and industry to help to strike a balance between facilitating data sharing and protecting innovators in the EHDS.
As this newsletter goes out there is still just about time to register for the IHI Forum 2026 – the programme is very exciting, showing the breadth and impact of our portfolio. In particular, we’re shining a light on how IHI projects provide a unique opportunity for early career scientists to work at the interface with industry. This year we want to recognise their work with a dedicated poster track and a panel discussion between the poster award winners. We are also hosting a “synergies hub” to give space to patients, civil society and other organisations that contribute and make IHI a truly distinctive health research programme.
Finally – this is the moment to have your say on the future of European health partnerships. The consultation is open until 16 October. Now is the time to contribute.

Illuminating the role of viral proteins in untreated chronic hepatitis D
VIROMARKERS found that people with chronic hepatitis D showed significantly higher levels of different forms – known as isoforms – of a particular viral protein compared to those with only hepatitis B. This indicates that these isoforms could be potential biomarkers.
New AI tool assesses liver cancer treatment success
IMAGIO has developed a tool that evaluates whether ablation, a treatment that uses heat to destroy liver cancer cells, has successfully eliminated tumours.
New project targets digital labelling framework for medical devices
MedTechLabel’s framework will make it easier for patients to find information they need, and ease the administrative burden for manufacturers.
FORTIFY to strengthen innovation protection in EHDS
The new project aims to develop a framework that will help to strike a balance between facilitating data sharing and protecting innovators.
Join IHI’s session at the European Health Forum Gastein
On 2 October, IHI will hold a session at the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) in Austria exploring how regulatory sandboxes can act as health innovation partnerships.
