What makes for a good IHI project? A word from our director

What makes for a good IHI project? That was one of the most frequent questions I had during our recent brokerage event – our annual forum to foster bold, interdisciplinary collaborations ahead of the 2026 calls. My answer was “ambition to transform” – our projects are scientifically ambitious, drawing on interdisciplinary consortia to push beyond the state of the art, aiming for a transformative impact on the field.

We see the outcomes of these ambitions in our bibliometrics study, which shows how our projects continue to publish excellent science, recognised and cited by peers globally. What’s more, it is the collaborative, cross-sectorial, and international papers that are making the biggest impact on the field – a testament to the IHI strategy of fostering bold collaborations. Scientific excellence is important to IHI; the programme should give young European talent an opportunity to build strong scientific careers at the same time as we strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and civil society.

However, a good IHI project also has the ambition to build lasting impacts on health, care and society. This needs the involvement of healthcare, regulators and the people living with disease. We had a lot of insightful advice on how to effectively include these groups in consortia at the brokerage event – and in the run-up to Christmas we also have exciting webinars on these topics. If you are working on a proposal for IHI call 12, don’t miss the newly published call texts, the discussion on regulatory impact, or the lively fireside chat on patient advocacy!
