Thoughts on the impact of partnerships – a word from our director
Bold collaborations. Transforming Health: this is how we describe IHI, and this month I had the opportunity to showcase the importance and impact of partnerships – bringing together researchers, public bodies such as regulators, civil society and patient organisations with industry to address difficult and important health challenges for Europe – at a conference on the future of the life sciences and health organised by the Polish presidency of the EU and the LifeScience Cluster Kraków.
The key to success is to recognise and leverage the complementary strength of different actors, for instance by aligning cutting-edge research with industrial engineering capabilities and processes for translating innovation into impact. Including people with the lived experience of disease allows projects to do science differently and enables completely new approaches to research built on deep partnerships.
The work of IHI and IMI projects to strengthen Europe’s capabilities for clinical trials are a great example of what these partnerships can achieve. As we read in this newsletter, our projects are enabling innovative new methodologies and working with experts, patient organisations and philanthropic foundations to build the networks that give patients in Europe more opportunities to take part in Europe-based clinical trials. In addition, ensuring that the EU remains competitive as a destination for running clinical trials is critical for European competitiveness and for giving people early access to innovative treatments.
